2024 Aug - An Update on SGC Leadership

Dear SGC Community,

It has been a little over two years since we started this journey together. We have had the opportunity to connect with Cinematics professionals from all over the globe. We have had riveting conversations with passionate experts about topics that matter most to us. We have created new memories with students and colleagues alike at in-person events. And most of all, we have learned that there is an enormous appetite for this type of meaningful community.

After a recent all-day summit held at SIGGRAPH, six of the original Founders came together in-person to strategize about short-term needs as well as long-term planning. We rejoiced in our accomplishments, but truly put the focus on two questions: (1) Where do we want to be in the next two years? and (2) How are we going to get there?

As a result, we determined that we needed to re-focus our efforts on several key areas to best support and sustain SGC into the future. We could only accomplish this through a “divide and conquer” approach by ultimately creating more structure than we have had up until this point. To align with the new structure, we are forming committees managed by each Founder to take on the ownership in each of these areas:

  • Membership: community growth by building an avenue towards an official SGC membership model

  • Events: continue elevating connections through in-person event opportunities

  • Community: continue updating & cultivating the virtual community between in-person events

  • Sponsorship: grow our non-profit organization through sponsor/donor partnerships & recognition

  • Awards: plan & execute the immense undertaking of an awards show to honor the best in cinematics

While there will undoubtedly be crossover and teamwork between the committees on specific initiatives, we felt that these best allowed us to create new areas of responsibility for our original leadership as well as for newcomers who will help us take SGC into the future as a sustainably-run volunteer organization. As we begin to bring on our first wave of volunteers to support in the above committees, it is also the ideal time to announce the new organizational structure of our leadership team

  • President: EMILY HSU

  • Vice President: BRIAN HORN

  • Events Committee Chair: MARIANNE HAYDEN

  • Community Committee Chair: LINA HALPER

  • Sponsorships Committee Chair: MATTHEW WARD

  • Awards Committee Chair: GREG MITCHELL

Although this inaugural leadership team is built from the original group of Founders, our hope is that we will be able to set up the Society for Game Cinematics organization and its community for success in ways that will no longer need us in the future, with a goal to pass the mantle after our two-year terms to the next group of SGC Leaders via official membership elections held in 2026.

We are more committed than ever to nurturing the growth of SGC and hope that you will join us in these efforts! The committees will be actively searching for volunteers in the near future, but if you would like to express interest to support a particular committee(s), please reach out to admin@societyforgamecinematics.com

With gratitude,

Emily Hsu - President, Society for Game Cinematics
Brian Horn - Vice President, Society for Game Cinematics
