2022 EOY Founders’ Update

Dear SGC Community,

What a year 2022 has been, and how quickly it seems to have blown by!

After what we predicted would be a “soft launch” in July, we saw an immediate avalanche of response from the community. The questions we as Founders were asking ourselves in the months prior: “Is anybody out there? How many people will be interested in engaging specifically on the topics of game cinematics?”

The answer: A lot.

Here’s what we have accomplished together since launching over the summer:

  • Assembled a community of like-minded game cinematics industry practitioners consisting of 1,600+ followers on LinkedIn and 600+ verified members on Discord, with thread topics covering breaking into the industry, pipeline processes, trouble-shooting with Unreal, and much more

  • Hosted our first ever in-person gathering for a happy hour at SIGGRAPH 2022 in Vancouver, where even some of our Founders were able to meet in-person for the first time!

  • Organized three live-streamed panels and one Discord-exclusive Q&A with incredibly talented and knowledgeable individuals from our community, tackling topics like “What is a Cinematic?” to “Whose Lens is it Anyway?” and “The Real-Time Challenge”

This is just the beginning.

We are industry professionals just like you and are working through the nonstop juggle of work, life, and getting this organization up on its feet. We have many goals beyond 2023, but here are our priorities for next year that will help us lay the foundation for all that this group can accomplish in the future:

  • As soon as we are approved for non-profit organization status, we will be able to take steps towards formalized memberships and become a self-sustaining entity that can provide more benefits and recognition back to its members. This is something that will take a great amount of time, energy and financial investment on our part, but we believe it will be worth the effort.

  • We want to continue strengthening the relationships and networks of those in the SGC community, specifically by creating opportunities for members to meet and start conversations. As we enter 2023, we are targeting an increased presence at industry events, hosting virtual and non-virtual SGC happy hours, and continuing to build out our platforms as a hub to share industry news, spark discussion, and engage in topical conversation.

To continue the great work that we have started this year, we realize that we can’t do it alone. This community can only exist if there is… well… a community. So what can you do to help?

  • Engage on the Discord! Throw a question out there that you’ve been mulling over, add your two cents to a thread, take a look at the latest work or reels of your fellow members and share some praise and/or constructive feedback. Each of our experiences are unique and that is how we will best learn from each other.

  • Volunteer with us! Have some experience with social media, websites, newsletters, event planning? We would love to hear from you!

As 2022 quickly comes to a close, we want to thank you all for being a part of this very special group. And as we set our sights on 2023, we look forward to meeting and sharing in more of this experience with you.

We wish you a joyous, safe, and wonderful holiday season!
